Like a child on Christmas Eve, I waited for the FedEx man. Today was the day I was to receive my newest toy, the “Sticky Pod Camera Mount.” I have been mounting cameras on all kinds of stuff for years and finally decided to go with a suction cup system. I have never trusted suction cups, can’t tell you why, but I have always preferred good old solid steel clamps and mafers and cartaleenies. Because of the violent and bumpy nature of my usual vehicles and filming environments, I need a solid grab that won’t slip.

When the package finally arrived I tore it open and scattered out the parts and pieces. I had ordered the “Director Kit”. My first impression was that it seemed to be solidly constructed. I was a little skeptical off the suction cups. All the one I have worked with in the past have had a little pump and release system on them. According to the instructions, to release these little suckers, I would just use my fingernail to pry them up. This did not fill me with confidence… Something else that did not fill me with confidence was the price, I was afraid it was going to be a cheap piece of decroded crap.  Sticky Pod openly brags about  the low price and superior quality. Call me skeptical.

My original plan was to do a simple mount and rather than a camera, I would mount a brick or something just to test the strength. I went out and applied one of the mounts, and I’ll be damned, the plate stuck on and I could not pull it off. The fingernail trick was kinda worthless. Max suggested a credit card and that seemed to work very well.

We picked a fairly tough spot to mount our first test, a low angle off the front of the truck, as opposed to something easy, like in the middle of the hood. We ended up to doing 4 different set ups in about an hour and a half. I was thrilled with how easy it was to rig.  The only shortcoming was I felt like I should have ordered more Sticky Pod knuckles, I used some Mafers as substitutes, and that was fine. My first impression is one of joy and sorrow. I wish I would have purchased this system a long time ago. It would have saved me so much time. Next week comes the real test, to see if the system can withstand the punishment of big ag equipment roaring thru fields, which is nothing like city streets. I will let you know how it goes… Check out the video after the pictures.
